‘PGC Schools‘, Japan’s first medical permanent makeup school, will celebrate its 38th anniversary in 2024. We asked this talented instructor about her thoughts on permanent makeup and her job as an instructor.

● My Thoughts on My Current Work
Currently, I work as both a practitioner and an instructor, focusing on training junior colleagues. When I first started learning permanent makeup, I joined a clinic. At the beginning, there were no patients at all, and while permanent makeup has now become very popular and recognized, attracting many bookings, there were days when I had zero appointments. Honestly, it was a difficult time.
To attract patients, I wrote my own blog, created a website, and received patient referrals from colleagues and doctors. Thanks to these steady efforts, little by little, the number of patients visiting began to grow. Honestly, there were times when I struggled, but I have confidence that I worked harder than anyone else. You might not be able to see it but… (haha).
● The Reason I Became an Instructor
The opportunity to become an instructor came through a connection, and it stemmed from the fact that when I first started, I had no one to teach me permanent makeup. Back then, I admired a ‘senpai’ nurse in her 60s from another clinic who had many patients who was specifically requested for her services and worked with such sparkle and grace. I thought she was incredibly cool. I wanted to become like her right away! Looking back, I realize I may have been a bit of a bother, but I had the chance to observe her work closely. This experience inspired me, and now, as an instructor, I want to give back by helping to train the next generation.
● My Vision for the Future of Permanent Makeup
Permanent makeup is a rapidly evolving field, and overseas, there are many highly skilled practitioners. In Japan, while it is progressing as a medical practice, there are still many aspects that are not well-known. I hope that as the level of practice improves throughout Japan, it will gain more recognition, and that in the future, every prefecture will have clinics where people can confidently receive permanent makeup treatments.
● A Message for Those Who Want to Learn Permanent Makeup
Many people who are considering learning permanent makeup ask me, “Do I need artistic talent?” or “Do I need to be good at drawing or makeup?” Honestly, the most important factors are study, practice, and a strong desire to learn. Above all, what truly matters is the strong determination to want to learn.
